Poorly-fitted vehicles can be uncomfortable and dangerous. Most cars and trucks are designed to fit drivers within an average range of height and weight. Many new models have features designed to allow you to tailor the driving environment to suit each person’s unique size. Here are some areas of particular interest:

u Doors—Pay close attention to how the doors open and close. Whether you will need to climb up or lower yourself into the vehicle is another consideration when getting in and out.

u Pedals—Find a comfortable position behind the wheel that lets you sit a safe distance (at least 10 inches from the steering mounted airbag) where you can reach the brake pedals and accelerator pedal. There are pedal extenders available from the aftermarket for small drivers.

u Seats—Power or manual seat height adjustments are available for shorter drivers to help visibility. Power- adjustable seat systems are also available to raise the steering wheel for larger drivers. Some cars have systems that have a memory which makes it possible for different drivers to share the same car.

u Seatbelts—Adjustable seatbelts move position up or down so the upper belt crosses the center of your chest. For larger drivers there are seatbelt extenders available from the aftermarket or directly from the manufacturer.

u Steering wheels—Tilt wheels are standard equipment in most vehicles. Some models have steering wheels that telescope in and out as well as tilt up and down.
